The Bohan Bulletin
May/June 2008
"Putt, Putt and Away"
Happy Spring to all of our fabulous patients! We like to take the time each month to bring you updates and news regarding specials and new additions to our practice. On May 9th, Dr. Bohan was able to take time off from the office and volunteer along with several of our team members at the United Way Charity Golf Tournament hosted by Exxonmobil. After a fun-filled day of sunburns, bottled water, and renegade golf balls, Dr. Bohan was priveleged to donate two free Zoom Whitenings to benefit the charity. Don't worry...injuries were minimal. Dr. Bohan was also able to donate some cosmetic procedures to the silent auction at Step By Step Christian Academy here in Tomball. Community is important to us, and although we see patients from all over northwest Houston, our heart belongs to this old-fashioned railroad town.
"Look Mom! Its Indiana Jones!"
As she drove into Tomball early one morning, Dr. Bohan proudly pointed out to her son, "Look honey, its mommy up there on the billboard." To which he meagerly replied , "cool mom." But added an enthusiastic, "Look! Its Indiana Jones!" It seems an Indiana Jones billboard is far more exciting to an 8 yr old than a billboard of a dentist...even one as cute as Dr. B! Many of you may have noticed our new billboard on Main Street near FM 2978. We are so excited to add some color to our logo and stretch our legs a bit, so take a look next time you're driving in!
"Fighting the Good Fight"
We are still in the midst of our campaign to educate patients about our new tool to combat oral cancer. We are now offering Vizilite oral cancer screening to all patients who are scheduled for an exam. Did you know that one person dies every hour from oral cancer in the United States alone? Did you also know that 27% of all victims use neither tobacco or alcohol products? According to the American Cancer Society, more women will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year than cervical cancer. These statistics are staggering, I know, but we now have a weapon to help us save lives...early detection. Vizilite is a simple and pain free procedure that takes about 10 minutes of your time. Patients are first asked to rinse with a not-so-yummy raspberry-flavored solution. Bon appetite'! This solution will then cause abnormal cells to become visible to Dr. Bohan with the use of a disposable ultraviolet light. Now I know what you're thinking..."Does my insurance cover it?" Unfortunately, it is not covered in most cases. This easy, once a year procedure, will soon become the standard of care for all dental providers. The cost of the Vizilite screening is $75, or .21 cents a day! It is recommended for all patients over the age of 18 once per year. Now I know what else you're thinking..."I'm too young to be at risk for oral cancer, besides I don't use tobacco or alcohol." Surprisingly, the fastest growing demographic of patients being diagnosed are sexually active patients as young as 18 with no family history. This is primarily due to the same HPV virus that is increasing the risk of cervical cancer in women. If you are over the age of 40, or a tobacco/alcohol user of any age, you are at the highest risk for this terrible disease. Oral cancer is a cruel and disfiguring form of cancer, but with early detection, more patients can live long and healthy lives.
"The Heart of the Matter"
To all our extra special patients out there whom the American Heart Association has recommended premedicating with antiobiotics prior to dental treatment, there are some new guidelines we'd like to inform you of. In April 2007, the AHA instituted some changes to their policy, resulting in a fewer number of patients acutally needing to be premedicated. However, because Dr. Bohan is not a cardiologist and cannot deterime the current condition of your heart, we will adhere to the previous guidelines unless we recieve written permission from your doctor to discontinue. If it has been recommended for you to take pre-med, we encourage you to consult with your doctor to determine if it's still necessary.
In Conclusion...
Well that about wraps it up for May's news. As always, we are so grateful to our patients for the treasure they entrust to us...their smile. For everyone else, we hope you'll spring in to see us soon! (Sorry, couldn't resist!!)
